During the recording of the BBC documentary, I had the pleasure of interviewing Humza Yousaf MSP. Humza is a great role model for me within my political life, as there isn’t any Scots-Asian who has become as senior as Humza within politics in Scotland. But more than his seniority, as a friend and mentor Humza is a kind, caring individual who takes great pride in his role representing his constituents.
During my interview with Humza, although the recording did not make it to the final cut, I was able to tell him of a story I still hold dear to me. I remember the first time I had ever seen Humza in the news, and the story wasn’t about a statement or any work he had done. Humza just happened to be standing behind Alex Salmond and a shot of his face very clearly could be seen in the back of this front page picture of the Herald. My family were so proud of that moment, that the paper stayed on our kitchen worktop for weeks as we were so happy to see another Scots-Asian who had ‘made’ the front page of the news.
Whenever I feel down about progress for minorities within Scotland, I think back to those times and the strides that have been made by Humza since. I hope that through sincerity in my work I will be able to inspire a new generation in the same way Humza has been a great example of hard work and progress for me.
